Remembering Mary Werne

Posted on by Bucksnort Trail Ride in Bucksnort News | Comments Off

Mary Werne, who rode at Bucksnort and Birdsong for many years, died recently. Many of you will remember her as an avid trail rider as well as a memorable and unique individual. Attached is one of the last pictures of her made at Bucksnort. Tried to find the picture I have of her and her toy (Smart car) made at Birdsong several years ago but have not been successful. Several of you will recall her visiting Birdsong and Bucksnort friends and showing off her new toy.

No obit has been found and there may not be one since her body went to the UT Medical Units in Memphis and no funeral home was involved.  A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 9 at St. William Catholic Church in Millington, TN.

It’s Not “Just A Horse”

Posted on by Bucksnort Trail Ride in Bucksnort News | Comments Off

From time to time, people tell me, “lighten up, it’s just a horse,”or, “that’s a lot of money for just a horse.” They don’t understand the distance traveled, the time spent, or the costs involved for “just a horse.” Some of the proudest moments of my life have come about with “just a horse.”

Many hours have passed and my only company was “just a horse,” but I did not once feel slighted. Some of my saddest moments have been brought about by “just a horse,” and in those days of darkness, the gentle touch of “just a horse” gave me comfort and reason to overcome the day. If you, too, think it’s “just a horse,” then you will probably understand phrases like “just a friend,” “just a sunrise,” or “just a promise.”

“Just a horse” brings into my life the very essence of friendship, trust, & pure unbridled joy. “Just a horse” brings out the compassion and patience that make me a better person. Because of “just a horse” I will rise early, take long walks and look longingly to the future.

So for me and folks like me, it’s not “just a horse” but an embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the future, the fond memories of the past, and the pure joy of the moment. “Just a horse” brings out what’s good in me and diverts my thoughts away from myself and the worries of the day.

I hope that someday they can understand that it’s not “just a horse” but the thing that gives me humanity and keeps me from being “just a person.”

So the next time you hear the phrase “just a horse,” just smile, because they “just” don’t understand.  – Author unknown

Tony and Linda Baker would like to announce that Billy and Ann Hicks, who have been responsible for Bucksnort food for the past 25 years, are retiring. Billy’s health issues will not permit him to continue and Ann is to undergo surgery this week. Billy, however, will continue to provide some supervision of meat preparation and cooking, so he may be seen in the mess hall some during the upcoming ride. Should you have interest in sending them a note and/or card, their address is Billy and Ann Hicks, 1994 Poplar Grove Rd., McEwen, TN 37101.

New Trail Signs & Map

Posted on by Bucksnort Trail Ride in Bucksnort News | Comments Off

Several folks will be at the Bucksnort camp the next three days helping Tony put up new trail signs he has been making. Will also engage in some trail marking/clearing. These signs will be very visible in upcoming rides and will assist people in finding their way around the various trails. An updated trail map has also been prepared and will be available for the Labor Day and October rides.

We have been enjoying rain in Tennessee for the past several days and hope you have received some. Grass is now getting green again and I have enjoyed seeing mud at the horse camp for the first time since May.

Debbie McCaskill requested we let Bucksnort folks know that A.G. Bean has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. A.G. and Jean have ridden at Bucksnort for many years. In recent years, A.G. has served as a trail guide at Circle E, near his home outside Winchester, TN.  We’ll keep you posted as we know more.  Please keep A.G. and Jean in your prayers.

Fantastic June Ride!

Posted on by Bucksnort Trail Ride in Bucksnort News | Comments Off

We had a fantastic June Ride! The trails were beautiful and serene, and the smell of campfires filled the cool evening air. Tumbling Creek was a refreshing spot in the afternoon for lots of folks!  We enjoyed delicious meals including fried chicken, pork chops, ribs, roast beef and fried catfish.  The kids enjoyed crafts, finding rocks for the rock contest, and looking for the pony shoes on the trails. Riders young & old tested their skills at the Trail Course Competition. Many enjoyed dancing to live music each night, too!  Special thanks to all who joined us! It was great to see everyone!
